March 2016: An Post response re Unsolicited Mail:

  • An Post are a provider of this service – where commercial material is distributed to households as part of the postal delivery – but are not a significant player compared to some commercial organisations;
  •  From time to time, the licence which An Post have, as the national postal delivery arm, obliges them to deliver certain items of mail regardless of the householders’ preference, e.g. election cards, health notifications, etc.
  •  Postal staff are advised (although there is no formal instruction or regulation) to respect householders’ preferences with regard to junk mail. The fact that An Post are paid a fee to deliver these items is not a factor in this.
